A Very Potter Musical

Hello to the many, many Harry Potter fans we have visiting us at the Loft this summer. I just wanted to share something I’ve heard a lot of buzz about lately – A Very Potter Musical. It is hilariously funny, and very worth a watch (or two!). You can watch the link here, and then proceed to YouTube for the second act. Happy watching!

Book blurb – A Wrinkle in Time

I (Anna) first stumbled into the magic of A Wrinkle in Time in 5th grade and have been coming back regularly ever since.  Here is a perfect book for lovers of fantasy (Harry Potter fans, that means you!), science fiction, adventure, mysteries, and quirky young characters facing both ordinary (fitting in at school) and extraordinary (battling an evil darkness) problems.

The novel begins on a stormy night in Meg Murray’s wooded home and ends only after Meg and her friends have traveled across space and time, “tessaring” between fantastic worlds in their quest to save Meg’s father and fight back against the darkness that is threatening to engulf Earth.

Another cool thing: A Wrinkle in Time is only the beginning!  The novel is the first of four in L’Engle’s “Time Quartet” series, and L’Engle has written a longer series of books following the life of another young female protagonist, Polly O’Keefe.  Just ask/ email me (Anna) if you’d like more L’Engle suggestions.

Book blurb – Born Confused

Written by Indian American author Tanuja Desai Hidier, this blindingly beautiful tale of summer love is as funny as it is enthralling. Born Confused follows Dimple Lala, a 16-year-old “American Born Confused Desi,” through the summer after her junior year of high school. A motley crew of characters accompanies Dimple – there is Gwen, her best friend, Kavita, her long-lost cousin, (who speaks in a lilting Indian accent that you can almost hear through the pages) and finally the most unsuitable of “suitable” boys, Dimple’s summer love, Karsh.

Born Confused is worth reading simply for the language – Desai’s descriptions flow effortlessly – but also touches on some really tough (and often common) issues that affect teens. Overall, Born Confused is a rollicking journey into teenagedom, complete with angst, confusion, and most important of all: love.
